Weston Bend State Park Weston, MO 2nd camp trip

We returned home from our 2nd camping trip.  This time we camped at Weston Bend State Park in Weston, Missouri.  We arrived on a Monday afternoon to find a few campers.  We had quite a few choices.  We ended up across the street from the Camp Host.  After a few trips around the camp ground there were a couple of other sites we liked better, and will probably choose one of them next time.  For this time though we picked campsite #6. Next time we might pick #24, 25 or 26.  It was easier this time to set up camp, still took a little longer than I would like but we are getting there.

We started our fire around 5 o'clock as usual to get ready for dinner.  As I said before we will have hot dogs on our first night out in a new campground for awhile.  That is exactly what we did.  For dessert this time I tried a new recipe.  The recipe call for 4 dessert cakes like you use for strawberries, a small can of pineapple rings, maraschino cherries as an option, brown sugar, and some juice from the canned pineapple. Put the brown sugar with some juice on the bottom of your pan, then top with the cakes cover with the foil and cook on the edges of the fire turning every 10 minutes as not to burn the cakes.  Our first attempt was okay  but we need some practice.  I did not cover and the cakes so they  dried out on top and then I did not put enough liquid in either.  I will let you know how it goes next time I attempt this dessert.  We ate it and it was still good.

Our evening was filled with surprise.  About one am we were visited by two big raccoons.  At first we thought there was a person in our camp but with further inspection Dave flashed a light and was starring two raccoons in the eye.  They proceeded to tear open the trash sack tried to open our cooler walked all over my table in the kitchen area of camp and tried to get inside my crock pot that was in a box. Dave scarred them off but they returned about an hour later. It was my fault they tried to tear up everything.  I thought I had wrapped up the pan from our dessert well enough that they couldn't recognize it. Wrong!!! Learned an important lesson.  No trash left outside at night when you go to bed.  Throw it away!!!  Had to clean up the trash that had been scattered next morning.

Day two we went into Weston and did some shopping and had lunch at the Weston Brewing Company.  Dave and I both had hamburgers.  Not fantastic but not bad.  After lunch we drove around and took pictures and did a little more site seeing of the town.  We visited the tobacco barn that is in the state park.  In the picture please note the vultures on the roof.  There were three perched on top.

Earlier in the day I had put together a dish in the crock pot for dinner.  Sauer Kraut, potatoes, carrots, onions and pork chops.  Yum!! Yum!!  Hardly any mess cooking and clean up was easy.

No raccoons this night slept well.  Glad the Royals have been playing.  It was nice to listen to them and sit by the fire each night.

Day three was busy.  Since we don't live to far from Weston I decided to go to my Tops meeting on that morning.  After my meeting I went to watch Ellie(grand daughter) for a couple of hours.  I went by our house to get cleaned up for the day so Dave decided to come along also since 7 hours in camp alone without a car would make a long day.  There was plenty to do around the house until I returned.  Which I did around 2pm and we headed back to camp.  We decided to go back into Weston and tour the local museum.  We had heard from some campers that it was really good.  They were right.  The gentleman who was there was full of lots of information and had lived in Weston all his life.  We really enjoyed our visit with him.  I would suggest going if you are ever in Weston and have time to look around.

For dinner this evening we had Walking Tacos again.  And they were as good this time as the last.  This time for dessert I had heard you could cook biscuits over an open fire.  This caught my attention so we attempted to cook biscuits.  After trying a couple of different ways of attaching them to our sticks as you can see in the pictures we were successful.   We dipped them in butter and then in cinnamon sugar.  Yum! Yum!
Can't wait to do this one again.

The evening went well with no animals waking us up.  Slept very well.  Warmer this night than the previous two nights.  No heater.

Next morning we went to Lewis and Clark State Park to take a look.  A small park but might be nice for an over night sometime.   There is a small town call Rushville on the wway to Lewis and Clark State Park.
Very interesting little town. Haven't look up the history yet but plan on doing that.  If you travel 45 north just past Snow Creek you will see Rushville on your right.  Turn in and take a look.  Something went on there once upon a time.  I will let you know what I find out.

Back to camp to pack up and we hear thunder.  Makes us hurry right along because we don't want the camper to get wet.  We beat any heavy rain that might have occurred after we left.  Just a few sprinkles as we packed up.

We had a great time at Weston Bend State Park.  They have several trails with a paved bike trail and a dog area where the dogs can run in a fenced area.  The overlook over the River was nice although I would have like to have seen more of the river.  Still worth the short walk to see.  The shops in Weston are fun to go through and we heard the McCormicks Distillery will be opening up again for tours in 2016.  We had breakfast at the Weston Cafe in downtown Weston.  A little pricey and the food was good.  Price of admission to the museum is voluntary. I hope you visit Weston even if you don't camp at the state park.  You could still visit the park and make a day of pick nick and shopping.

I hope this wasn't too long and that you enjoy the pictures I posted.

Until we meet again,
Happy Camping
